The need for access to justice, especially among the indigent, became evident to me very early in my childhood. It is the recognition of this reality in my formative years that planted the seed in my mind to become a lawyer. Towards the attainment of this objective I dedicatedly strove in my early life, arriving at the destination at age twenty four (24). En route, and with wisdom gathered from life’s experience, I realized that, as it is in my country, the poor being in the majority, was a universal reality. Therefore, my singular contribution will simply mean nothing, hence the idea of a law firm was born. The dream was always to make it as large as possible with branches in different parts of Guyana and even beyond; and that while corporate clientele would be welcomed, the focus would remain, the ordinary citizens.
‘Bhagwati’, after Chief Justice Bhagwati of India was chosen because of his refashioning of Indian jurisprudence, amendments to and interpretation of Indian Rules of Court and the Constitution of India to make access to Justice easier for the large indigent population of India. Though I have assumed higher office, it is my hope and expectation that those who are left in charge, will not part company with the conceptual objectives of this firm. It is here to serve all clients, especially the ordinary people of this world. I wish the firm all the best in the future.
